Why is smoking a problem?
Smoking greatly increases the risk of heart disease, particularly after a heart attack. Smoking increases the risk of heart disease by 100%. After a cardiac event, smokers face an increased risk of 50% of having a fatal heart attack within the next year. There is also increased risk of heart rhythm disturbances among smokers. Passive (or "second-hand") smoke at home and in the workplace also increases the risk of heart disease for those affected.
