Yoga and the Physical Body
(Please note that the information below is general information, and that yoga is not intended to take the place of medical treatment that your doctor may recommend. Rather, practices such as yoga can enhance your overall sense of well-being, and have been shown to have health-enhancing effects on the body, as mentioned below.)

Circulatory system: Yoga practices assist in effective shunting of blood through the body through the release of muscle contraction, and increase blood flow to the extremities. Through the process of stretching, rotation of the joints, compression and release, circulation improves, stiffness is reduced, and internal organs receive a massage. The strengthening of the body gives us greater confidence to face challenges, and the relaxation of the body creates a sense of well-being. The stress reduction may also reduce blood pressure.

Digestive system: Yoga gently compresses and releases the organs of digestion and elimination, thus promoting better digestion and elimination through the stimulation of these organs. As the body relaxes, there is greater blood flow to these organs, and the relaxation allows the digestive process to work more effectively in using nutrients. Irritable bowel syndrome has been shown to be greatly improved through balance of the flow of energy and relaxation techniques.

Endocrine system: The endocrine system helps the cells of the body communicate with each other through the secretion of hormones and chemicals. Depending upon our level of stress or relaxation, the functioning of our organs is either enhanced or diminished. Positive emotions tend to flood the body with chemicals that heal, and negative emotions and stress tend to undermine our healing process through the release of adrenalin and cortisol. This can ultimately affect the level of cholesterol and the health of the heart.

The immune system: The immune system defends the body against disease and is positively affected through yoga by stimulating the flow of lymph through the body, releasing toxic waste. Stress chemicals such as cortisol metabolize white blood cells and burn them for fuel, making them less available to fight infection and heal. The movement and stretching of yoga assists in the regeneration of cells, and helps reduce the inflammatory process in the body.

Muscular system: One of the effects of the stress response on the body is a contraction of the muscles. Even arteries and veins have muscle fiber. Increased muscle tension restricts the flow of blood and healing nutrients to the muscles, and restricts the release of waste products, The buildup of toxic wastes in the muscles results in tightness and pain. Through lack of activity, muscles can lose their strength and tone. Yoga helps in the release of toxic waste products in the muscles, and one's sense of well-being is greatly enhanced through greater ease of movement.

Skeletal system: When muscles are contracted, the joints are affected. Movement can help to increase range of motion. In addition, stretching and strengthening can also stimulate bone density. Often, the skeletal structure can become more balanced and aligned through awareness of posture and how we
